Breeding: what foals inherit, potential maths, and the breeding station

Updated · Horses

Quick answer

Foals inherit a mix of both parents' colouring, white patterns and some personality traits (official), and their strength and endurance potential is roughly the parents' average plus a random roll (community maths: about −4 to +11), based on the parents' potential, not their current training. The breeding station has three stages: natural cover → fresh semen + the foal simulator (previews likely foals) → frozen semen. Players report pregnancy of about 8 rounds, foals becoming yearlings at 4 and adults at 12 rounds, and the mare can't be ridden late in pregnancy until weaning. Breeding also happens without a station if a stallion shares a group with mares — boarders' included.

The potential maths (one player’s testing, unverified)

Foal potential ≈ (dam potential + sire potential) / 2 + random(−4 … +11). Each parent with Bad Inheritance shifts the roll by −2; Good Inheritance does the reverse; hidden traits still count, and the stage-2 foal simulator ignores hidden ones. Good Mom gives better current starting values, not potential.

Breeding station stages (community costs)

Stage Cost / upkeep / build Unlocks
1 1,500 / 15 per day / 2 days Natural cover with your own stallion or a breeder stud (~100 and up)
2 5,000 / 40 / 3 days Fresh semen collection; foal simulator to preview foals; more stud-service sales
3 15,000 / 100 / 5 days Frozen semen (achievement A Frozen Legacy)

Breeder studs you pay for don’t show their traits before the cover (player reports). Two days after launch 74% of players had bred a foal, 50.7% had raised one to adulthood, 1.5% had a stallion cover 50 mares.

Ages in rounds (players’ counts)

Born 0 → yearling ~4 → adult ~12 → rideable and breedable to ~180 → retires ~192 (leaves the game). Your starter mare begins at 60.

FAQ

Does training the parents give better foals?

No — only potential is inherited. A fully trained 60-potential horse passes on 60, not its trained value. Train to see the true potential, or pay for a vet check.

How long is pregnancy?

About 8 rounds (community figure). The mare can't be ridden in the second half until the foal is weaned, and her stats drop meanwhile.

When can I sell or train a foal?

Foals become yearlings at about 4 rounds (they can be lunged by the yearling trainer) and adults at about 12. Home-bred yearlings and well-trained young adults are the designed sale income.

Why did my mare get pregnant without a breeding station?

Any un-gelded stallion in the same stable group or field can cover any mare — including boarders' mares, which costs a fine and prestige. Separate groups or geld.

Can I buy a pregnant mare?

Players report you can't.

Is there an inbreeding penalty?

Not documented. One player's maths mentions 'unrelated parents', hinting related pairs roll differently, but nothing confirmed.
