Rules of thumb
- One stallion per group, and never in a group with a boarder’s mare.
- Nursing mares with foals can share a group; walks let the foal come along.
- Geld the colts you won’t breed from — it’s cheap and removes the risk for good.

Quick answer
Horses live in stable groups — you get one more group with each stable stage — and daily care (hay, water, mucking out) is done per group, while grooming, grain and injuries are per horse. A stallion in a group with mares will cover them, boarders' mares included (fine + prestige loss + the hidden Oops! achievement), and two stallions in a group with a mare will fight (hidden achievement The boys are fighting). Use the Move button on the care screen to regroup, or geld a stallion in town for about 50 (achievement No more babies, 10.4% of players).
Yes — swapping between full groups was added in demo patch v0.1.8.
Not reported. It removes breeding; a gelding can still train and compete.
Yes: if your pasture stage is lower than your stable stage, some groups have no field (community-reported) — keep the two in step.
