Prestige is the game's progress meter. You gain it by upgrading buildings, winning competitions, looking after boarders and owning high-quality horses; you lose it by failing competitions, competing on a dirty horse or without appropriate (show) clothing, and letting a horse fall seriously ill. It gates three things: the quality of horses the breeder offers, the variety of tack in the shop, and which trail rides you can unlock. Achievements mark 50% and 99%.

What it unlocks
Breeder — the quality of horses on offer rises with prestige.
Shop — more tack items appear.
Trail rides — new rides (forest, beach, mountains) become available to unlock.
So a cheap early boost is boarders: they pay board and raise prestige when cared for (see boarders).
FAQ
The competition says 'inappropriate clothing' — what do I do?
Go to your house, open Clothing at the bottom and select show wear before the competition. Competing in the wrong clothes costs prestige.
Does a dirty horse really lose prestige?
Yes, the August dev update lists competing on dirty horses as a prestige loss. Groom before every show.
Can I make prestige grow faster?
Yes, the official FAQ says prestige gain is one of the difficulty settings.
